Gabrielle Zemaityte-Travis

Gabrielle Zemaityte-Travis’ practice is centered around the personification of non-human entities, objects, and technologies. Through video installations and large-scale photography she investigates how nature’s portrayal in mythology and debates around ethics of AI in contemporary press are ways of relating to other-than-human, yet expose existential human anxieties. Her works orbit the internet - they are often about someone, who is offline, but plugged in somewhere… In her most recent works, she has been creating alter-ego characters to represent the longing of unidentifiable and generalised subjects that are either hiding behind the narrative or are being directly addressed by the protagonists of the films. The worlds of her video installations (i.e. Golden Glow, 2021 and Ether, 2023) take place between characters, represented on screen, and the physical space (mise-en-scene of sorts) that the audience occupies.

Language and communication are also prominent themes in Zemaityte-Travis’ practice - they have been employed as both tools and subjects of her previous projects. For example, in 2011 she facilitated a spatial situation, that allowed anonymous communication within a physical space (Nonpersonal Communication), while in 2018 she collaborated on a digital program that was meant to exist as a commentary on the implications of hyper-personalised language - Bad Day.
